I agree with Mark. Many ideas come from discussions forking off onto
tangents. Also, many  times people are doing things one way and a reply to
a letter on a totally different subject may show them an easier way to do
things.

Case in point: About a week ago I posted to the Imagine mailing  list with
a question I was kind of ashamed to ask. I had no idea, after having Imagine
for 3+ years, how to make the background of a brushmap transparent so I could
put decals on things. The first response to the list was a lengthy explanation
on how I had to use 2 maps, make the second a filter map, and use it as a
sort of ad-hoc alpha-channel to get the object to show through. Very length,
very complicated, and quite confusing.

Then someone else posted and said, 'Easy. Just make sure your transparent
color is in palette position 0 and then when you apply the brushmap click
on Use Genlock on the brushmap requester.'

This is not explained in the manual, is not self evident, and many many
people have now benifited from this.

On a moderated mail list if I had asked my question I could have easily
gotten a response from the moderator telling me to read the FAQ and a number
of people would not have benefitted from the discussion.
